CANS 2024 ANNUAL MEETING RECAP

Congratulations to Dr. Jospeh Chen 2023 CANS President, for his leadership and thoughtful program discussing “Power in Neurosurgery”. The meeting was held at the towering historic landmark InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco January 12-14th.  The new generation of academic leaders presented their vision and path to leadership, we were updated on medical malpractice, physician unionization, state and federal health care policy and the changing landscape of the AANS. 

Winners of the resident prizes were:  Rebecca Houston, DO of Arrowhead, Arvin Wali of UCSD and John Yue of UCSF. They and their faculty mentors are to be congratulated for their efforts.

A true gem in California Neurosurgery was honored with the Byron Cone Pevehouse award: Dr. Lawrence Shuer. He has served the CANS board for 30 years and has held countless other leadership roles in organized neurosurgery.  His integrity and humility should be an example for all of us.

The Lifetime Exceptional Service Award was given to Moustapha AbouSamra to acknowledge the vast contributions that he has made to CANS and neurosurgery on a state and national level. He has held almost every office imaginable and never ceases to tire from the work of a neurosurgeon dedicated to socioeconomic issues. Dr. AbouSamra is a past-recipient of the Bryon Pevehouse Award and now sits amongst the most recognized of our members in its history.
